I designed and built this custom drop leaf table for a Toronto couple that was looking to replace an aging kitchen table in their newly renovated home. They were looking for something clean and modern, as well as hard wearing, with the ability to quickly and easily add or subtract a small amount of the tabletop surface.
The solution: An updated take on the classic drop leaf table, with tough, but aesthetically pleasing materials and easy to operate drop leaf support system. The base is made from hard maple with a tinted lacquer finish, the tabletop is Corian solid surface and the custom leaf support was machined from aluminium and UHMW to form a strong, low profile support system with smooth motion.
New Work: A custom Standing desk in North American Beech and powder coated steel.
I’m very happy to see this completed; the beech looks really great against the RAL 7033 powder coating, which was chosen by the client (she could not have chosen a more perfect color, in my opinion). The color of the powder coating has a long military history, including german war tanks and submarines and dates back as far as WWII. The use of a unique color for furniture is refreshing to say the least and it’s a welcome change from the standard black or white that is usually chosen for powder coating.
The shape of the frame is another unique element that I was happy to incorporate into the design of the desk; I enjoy using rigid geometry and architectural structure in my furniture work and it’s not often that I get to, so I was very pleased to have the chance with this project.
I think this will win for my favorite project of the year.
I recently wrapped up this custom, 7 foot credenza for a client's Muskoka cottage. Clad in barnboard and blackened steel, dovetailed drawer construction, Spray stained and lacquered interior.
I just finished off this custom American Cherry writing desk yesterday afternoon, which I designed and built for a couple of friends’ home office.
American Cherry, solid steel with an antique gun metal patina and dovetailed Maple drawer boxes.
Drawer faces are on, this baby is almost ready to go to it's new home! #cherry #woodworking #handmade #furniture #design #toronto
